Alan RhodyAlan Rhody's music has taken him to every corner of North America, to festivals, concert halls, schools, coffee houses, saloons, universities and house concerts as well as national television and radio. And though his songwriting has earned him recognition and many Gold and Platinum Record Awards, Rhody still loves making that connection in a live performance setting.

The Atlanta Rhythm Section, Jay Patten, Kevin Welch, Kieran Kane, Hoyt Axton, Murray McLauchlan, George Jones, Don Gibson, Lunch At Allen's, Michael Martin Murphey, David Mallett and Canadian Hall of Famers, The Good Brothers round out the ever growing list of artists who have recorded his work.

Rhody's own critically acclaimed recordings have featured duets with John Prine and Maura O'Connell and musical contributions from the late John Hartford, and Gillian Welch partner David Rawlings.

On September 20, Alan is coming to Steilberg String Instruments for a special day of instruction and performance. There will be songwriters' workshop from 11am-4pm, which will span all facets of songwriting and the industry. Then, he will give a special intimate performance at 5pm. Richard Gilewitz Acoustic Adventures and Mini-GillaCamp

Performance: Friday, Oct. 17th, 2008 -- 7:00 PM (FREE event)
GillaCamp: Saturday, Oct. 18th, 2008 -- 12:00PM - 6:00PM (Fee: $195)
.

Alan RhodyKnown as one of the strangest men in acoustic music today, Richard Gilewitz fascinates his audiences with fingerstyle gymnastics on his 6 and 12-string guitars while spinning yarns too unbelievable not to be true. His ability to make one guitar sound like an entire orchestra stems from 33 years of well-honed technique and 25 years of on the road worldwide touring, creating his own signature sound that has been captured on his CDs, DVDs, and songbooks. But it is his live shows that bring out the best in this author, composer, guitarist, humorist, AND storyteller who follows a distinct cadence that creates a glow that continually grows a little brighter with each tune.

Richard is bringing his own brand of expertise and entertainment to Steilberg String Instruments on October 17th and 18th. Friday night (10/17) will feature Richard in a free performance of many of his genius arrangements while sharing his insight and perspective on the acoustic guitar. Saturday (10/18), Richard will present a Mini-GillaCamp which is described as an all in one unique Guitar Music Camp that is fun, inspirational, and invigorating. Gilewitz says "the GillaCamp is the player's answer to turning over common frustrations while increasing fingerstyle techniques, overcoming fears and insecurities, rekindling the passion for learning new guitar pieces, and rediscovering the joy of guitar!" Among topics covered will be those regarding fingerstyle and slide guitar technique, composition, and recording (see Richard's website for more details). There is a $195 fee for the GillaCamp.

To register by credit/debit card, call (502)491-2337 or simply stop by Steilberg String Instruments, 4029 Bardstown Rd., Louisville.

Monthly Old-time Jam with Host David Brooks

Wednesday, August 27-- 6:30-8:30
FREE!

Here at Steilberg String Instruments our new Monthly Old-time Jam has been gaining a lot of steam. Conceived of and hosted by our pal David Brooks, this event happens one Wednesday night each month in our concert room. The idea was to get together like-minded folks who are working on (or wish to be working on) standard Old-time and fiddle tune repertoire and play for an hour and a half. All of the tunes are taken at easier tempos than you’d normally find at a jam so your focus can be put on technique, playing cleanly, and learning new tunes.

It’s been a lot of fun so far, and we’ve welcomed banjo players, mandolinists, guitarists, fiddlers, hammer dulcimer players and more. If you’re interested, give us a call, or better yet, just come on out. It’s a great group of folks to play with!

Here’s an idea of some tunes we’ve played so far: Liberty, Angeline the Baker, Forked Deer, Big Scioty, Cold Frosty Morning, Billy in the Lowground, Red Haired Boy, Kitchen Girl, as well as other favorites.

Most (if not all) of these tunes are available in the Fiddler’s Fakebook – which is a great resource for this material. Come on out and have a good time.

Steilberg String Instruments is proud to present:

An Acoustic Evening with Roger Schmidt and Stonebridge Guitars

Free - Tuesday, July 8th at 7pm

Taylor Road Show You may or may not yet be familiar with the new Stonebridge Guitars available at Steilberg String Instruments, but in the near future, we’re confident you will be. Being all solid wood and hand built in the Czech Republic, Stonebridge guitars boast incredible features, craftsmanship and value for fingerstylists, singers, and bluegrass players alike. To help drive that point home, Mr. Roger Schmidt, the man responsible for bringing Stonebridge Guitars to the USA, will be displaying his stunning acoustic fingerstyle artistry with several models for the ears of eager listeners.

We met Roger when he came to our shop wanting us to carry the Stonebridge Guitars. Obviously, we were very impressed with the guitars, but we were equally impressed with his marvelous playing. So we talked him into a concert, as a chance to show our friends both his great playing and their great guitars. As a Canadian resident, he doesn’t make it to these parts often, but he’ll be near by for the Chet Atkins Society event in Nashville, and we got him to stop by for an evening of fun. You’ll enjoy his playing, which bears similarity to the likes of Tommy Emmanuel, fellow Stonebridge player Thom Bresh, Pierre Bensusan and Chet Atkins, while also bearing his own personal stamp.

Come on out and enjoy!

Brazilian Guitar Workshop with Guitarist Rick Udler

Tuesday, July 15th -- 7-9pm
$35
Steilberg String Instruments

Taylor Road ShowGuitarist Rick Udler was born in Santiago, Chile, and through the years has lived in such diverse musical climates as New Orleans, Miami, and his current residence, Sao Paolo, Brazil. For this guitarist of international acclaim, these various cultures have shaped a unique musical style, but it is the traditional Brazilian influence that has both won his heart and won him audiences all over the globe.

Today he is one of the leading proponents of the guitar style made famous by the likes of Baden Powell, Luis Bonfa and Antonio Carlos Jobim. Not just music for Bossa Nova or Brazilian Jazz fans - guitarists of all types have recognized the beauty of this art and used it to add colors and textures to other styles. As a case in point, Rick will be here for a workshop at our store just a week after conducting seminars and concerts at the Chet Atkins Appreciation Society event in Nashville, where he'll be playing with diverse friends and musicians such as Pat Kirtley, Thom Bresh, Muriel Anderson, Pete Huttlinger, and more.

Rick has hosted many workshops across the globe, and has a deep knowledge of this beautiful guitar style which he greatly enjoys sharing. The workshop we are hosting will be geared towards intermediate to advanced players, who are encouraged to bring a guitar - though those wishing to sit and watch are welcome too. It will be an ideal evening for fingerstyle players-to-be, Atkins-style pickers, classical players looking to branch out, jazz players looking for a new approach, or anyone with a curiosity towards South American guitar music. It's a rare opportunity to learn directly from an internationally recognized master on the instrument - please join us!

Tuition will be $35 for the two-hour clinic beginning at 7pm at Steilberg String Instruments. You are encouraged to sign up early, as seating will be limited. Call for details or stop on by to sign up.

Taylor Road Show

On Thursday, May 8th we will be hosting the newly energized Taylor Guitar Road Show series. Joining us for the event will be staff members from the Taylor shop in California as well as guitarist extraordinaire Wayne Johnson.
