Steilberg String Instruments Teachers Concert
Benefiting St. Joseph Children's Home
Monday, June 21st, 2010 -- 7:30pm $5
Back by popular demand! We are excited to announce our popular Teachers Concert on Monday, June 21st at 7:30. This event is always an exciting evening designed to give folks a chance to hear our exceptional teaching staff having a great time playing music they love. People keep asking about it, and we've got some surprises in the works, so make your plans now. The community at large, as well as actual students, may not even realize the talents hanging out around our shop. You gotta hear this! You can expect to hear music from diverse artists such as The Beatles, Weather Report, Chick Corea, Earl Scruggs, Django Reinhardt, and more!
Admission this year will be $5 with 100% of the money collected going to the St. Joseph Children's Home. The St. Joe's home on Frankfort Ave. houses forty kids from 5-16 years old, year-round. Through our friends at Star Duck Charities, we learned that the residents are in dire need of revamping their recreation room, and thus decided to turn the evening's concert into a fundraiser to help out. Extra donations beyond the ticket price are graciously accepted. Seating is limited, but we're excited to see you. We'll all have fun and do a good thing too!

Steilberg String Instruments and Taylor Guitars present:
Mike Keneally and Bryan Beller
Friday, May 22nd, 2009 -- 7:30pm Tickets $5 – Limited Seating

Once again, we are overjoyed to welcome guitarist, Mike Keneally and his bass playing partner-in-crime Bryan Beller to our stage. If you’ve not witnessed their unmatched chemistry, staggering musical prowess and uplifting energy, then this will not be something you’ll want to miss. It’s been a few years now since we’ve seen the fellers, and we were excited to hear from them. They said they’d be coming through the area and really wanted to play on our stage again. Apparently we hold a very special place in their hearts – especially Bryan’s. Actually, when they were here last, it was one of the first occasions that he got to spend time with the lady who is now his wife. So you see, we’re not just here for instrumental love, but for matrimonial love too!
When they’ve come in the past, we’ve been amazed at the dedicated audience that comes out – people have traveled from cities and states afar. And for good reason – these guys are great! As a legendary Zappa sideman, musical partner to Steve Vai, and guitar trailblazer for over 2 decades, Mike has earned the title “Stunt Guitarist” Frank Zappa coined for him 1988. But, unlike most guys of his stature, Mike is not just about “chops.” Don’t misunderstand - he’s got ‘em, but he is more concerned with composition, and musicality. VH1.com says it well with, “ Mike Keneally is a staggering talent who believes rock should aim straight for the soul.”
Mike will be playing the new Taylor T3/B semi-hollow electric guitar as well as several acoustic models. If you want to hear what this guitar is capable of in the hands of a master, you need to hear this!
“Think of the best player you’re aware of. Now look up a bit higher and the soles of the shoes you spy 50 feet above you are those of Keneally, the man who Frank Zappa called ‘a genius.’ And he was right.” -Guitarist Magazine
“Keneally is sustaining the Zappa legacy as well as anyone in music today. Frank would be proud.” -DownBeat Magazine
Steilberg String Instruments and Stonebridge Guitars Present:
An Evening with National Fingerstyle Champion Guitarist
Richard Smith
Monday, May 4th, 2009 -- 7:30pm - $10

Born in Kent, England in 1971, Richard Smith was onstage wowing audiences alongside Chet Atkins by the ripe old age of 11. That alone is impressive enough, but when you also factor in that he went on to win the 2001 USA National Fingerstyle Guitar Championship AND receives continuous glowing endorsements from the likes of Tommy Emmanuel and the Late Great Jerry Reed, it’s understandable that we’d jump at the chance to host a concert/clinic with the man himself!
So mark your calendars folks and come enjoy the incredible finger-picking prowess of one of the world’s finest Atkins-style players. While Richard Smith claims Chet as the number one influence in his stellar picking, easily detectable in his style are the influences of Django Reinhardt, Lenny Breau, Les Paul and more. It’s precisely these open influences and incredible history of playing alongside the greats that set Richard apart. There’s not much more to say about his ability other than to directly quote Tommy Emmanuel: “If you like my playing, then you should hear Richard Smith!”
Richard will be performing on his Stonebridge guitar, a guitar with which he’s touring the country, and playing for eager ears across the land. Don’t miss your chance to hear his one of a kind sound!

Monthly Old-time Jam with Host David Brooks
3rd Wednesday of Every Month -- 6:30-8:00
FREE!
Here at Steilberg String Instruments our new Monthly Old-time Jam has been gaining a lot of steam. Conceived of and hosted by our pal David Brooks, this event happens one Wednesday night each month in our concert room. The idea was to get together like-minded folks who are working on (or wish to be working on) standard Old-time and fiddle tune repertoire and play for an hour and a half. All of the tunes are taken at easier tempos than you’d normally find at a jam so your focus can be put on technique, playing cleanly, and learning new tunes.
It’s been a lot of fun so far, and we’ve welcomed banjo players, mandolinists, guitarists, fiddlers, hammer dulcimer players and more. If you’re interested, give us a call, or better yet, just come on out. It’s a great group of folks to play with!
Here’s an idea of some tunes we’ve played so far: Liberty, Angeline the Baker, Forked Deer, Big Scioty, Cold Frosty Morning, Billy in the Lowground, Red Haired Boy, Kitchen Girl, as well as other favorites.
Most (if not all) of these tunes are available in the Fiddler’s Fakebook – which is a great resource for this material. Come on out and have a good time.

Steilberg String Instruments & Washburn Guitars present:
Banjo Workshop with Sonny Smith
Monday, November 17th --7:30 -- Free!
Thanks to Washburn Guitars, we're excited to host a workshop with National Bluegrass Banjo Champion, Sonny Smith. Sonny has been playing banjo since he was a child. As the story goes, his father put a banjo in his closet and instructed young Sonny that he was "not to play that banjo." As you would guess, that was just enough to make a young boy want to play banjo. And play banjo he did! As the winner of the National Banjo Championship Competition in Winfield, Kansas in 1996 and runner up in the 2008 competition, he's made an indelible mark on the bluegrass world.
Sonny has honed his chops as a member of the Smokey Mountain Stringband at Dollywood and as a featured performer at the Smokey Mountain Jubilee. His command of the instrument is amazing and his delicacy and drive are of the degree that every banjo player would love to attain. This is a great opportunity to take a master-class workshop from one of the Banjo's busiest and most exciting performers. Sonny will be performing on the new "Sonny Smith Model Banjo" made by Washburn and teaching the ins and outs of this incredible style.
This event will be free and open to the public, so banjo pickers of all levels and interests are most welcome. Even banjo players–to-be are encouraged to come out!
