Hofner → About Hofner
Handmade in Germany, Hofner Guitars offer superb craftsmanship, superior materials, and a unique approach to all the instruments they build. Hofner has consistently been a favorite through the years for distinguished musicians ranging from that bass player from that little band from Liverpool “The Bee-atles”, to jazz heroes like Jimmy Raney, and Attila Zoeller and many more. In recent years Hofner has grown steadily, creating some fine electric and archtop guitars, as well as some remarkable Classical Guitars, which are all handmade in their German workshop.
From the ergonomic and eye-catching Jazzica Archtop Guitar and the regal and sleek Thinline, to new models like the Jimmy Bruno Signature model, the company offers both traditional and non-traditional approaches to their Jazz guitars, while always giving the player deluxe features (Kent Armstrong Pickups, High Quality Wood, Schaller Tuners, 24 frets on some models, etc.), for very reasonable prices. One model we stock is “The New President” – a modern version of the original “President,” which actually was a model played for decades by Late Jazz Great and Louisville native Jimmy Raney. In fact, the owner of Steilberg String Instruments, Jim Steilberg, used to do repairs, as well as custom alterations to Raney’s Hofner - his main axe.
On the unplugged side, the Master Series Classical Guitars are another group of instruments we are extremely excited about. All solid wood and all handcrafted by master luthier Dieter Fischer, they are of the highest quality and the prices are incredibly reasonable. From the HM88 (solid Rosewood back and sides, solid Bearclaw Spruce top) to the HM85 (solid Mahogany and solid spruce), professionals and students alike can appreciate the tone, feel, price, and craftsmanship. A new model, “The Black Forest” is made of Walnut back and sides, Bearclaw Spruce top, and features a maple neck and binding. Interestingly, and as a special tribute to their home nation, all of the wood used to build this guitar was harvested from the “Schwarzwald,” the legendary “Black Forest” in southern Germany.
Hofner does also offer a few inexpensive classical guitars - excellent student guitars, as well as a number of other high quality instruments. Here at Steilberg String Instruments we are very happy to offer their fine products, and the high standard of quality they bring fits in well here. Check them out and you’ll find some very nice pieces, in a number of price ranges. We’re very picky about what instruments we’ll carry, and we’re very excited about these - and that says a lot.
